SCHOOL STUDENTS TO TAKE ON ICE - FISHING FIELD TRIPS
Lac Brochet is located at the northern end of Manitoba and has a population of 700 people. In the community, the center piece is the Peter Casimir Memorial School which has over 260 students and is where the ice fishing story begins.
People in the community like to sport fish, so as part of the Fish Futures provincial youth angling program that is sponsored by Nueltin Fly-In Lodges, Don Lamont, Conservation Officer Earl Simmons and Gary Gurke visited the school to talk about sport fishing and conservation.
While visting this first class facility, students learned about the aquatic environment around them and the importance of fisheries conservation. Each student that day went home with an ice fishing rod and reel, an early Christmas present for the community. In addition, Fish Futures donated an ice auger, skimmers and lures so students would be able to continue on with their ice fishing field trips this winter.
This trip and program could not have been possible without the generous support of: Principal Kym Antsanen and her staff at the school, corporate donors - Nueltin Lodge, Skyward Aviation, Calm Air and Gardewine who supplied free of charge the transport of all the food, equipment and people to the community.
