New for 2009 is the “FREE” Manitoba Youth Angling Card. The card was introduced to:

  • promote the benefits of recreational angling to Manitoba's youth;
  • include youth in programs that connect them to the environment
          and build self-esteem; and
  • compliment and enhance existing programs being undertaken
          through provincial partnerships.

  • Cards are available at most hardware and sporting good stores, fishing centres, lodges and other stores who sell angling licenses throughout the province. Kids can then register on-line to win incredible fishing prizes at Manitoba's new youth angling website.

    The youth angler website is Manitoba's portal to youth fishing programs throughout the province. There are on-line fishing games, stories, and a place to upload your favourite fishing photos. Once registered, you can keep in touch with what's happening!

    "The Big Chase"

    Walleye is a freshwater fish native to most of Canada and to the northern United States. It is a North American close relative to the European pikeperch. The common name, “walleye”, comes from the fact that their eyes, like those of cats, reflect light. Walleye grow to about 75 cm (30 in.) in length, and weigh up to about 7 kilograms (15 lb.). The maximum recorded size for the fish is 107 cm (42 in.) in length and 11.3 kilograms (25 lb.) in weight. Walleye can tolerate an exceptionally wide range of environmental conditions from northern Canada to the southern United States. The walleye is a cool water species, meaning that it prefers intermediate temperatures when compared to warm water fish like bass and cold water fish like trout. Walleye generally select clean, hard bottoms rather than bottoms of silt, muck or other soft materials. They favour bottoms with a combination of sand, gravel and rock. This type of bottom produces a great deal of insects and other invertebrate life which in turn attracts baitfish which then attracts walleyes. The best thing we can do to protect walleye for future generations is to insure the habitatremains unpolluted.
